thomas lately :)

This is one of the only things he can successfully pull up on entirely on his own....he tries on many other things but has a hard time getting a good grip on them!

1. We recently put Thomas in a new, big boy car seat!  He's still rear-facing, but no more baby carrier!  He wasn't too heavy for his old seat, but he was getting too long :)  As to how he likes it--let's just say he's never been a fan of the car anyway and the new seat doesn't seem to make it better.

2.  Teething turned my normally sweet baby into a fussy pants.  After a few bad naps and rough nights, he officially has two bottom teeth that are about half way out.  We've been trying to get a picture, but he likes to run his tongue along them, so it's been hard!!

3. Now that Thomas can pick up finger foods, he doesn't want us to feed him.  He's quite determined to do it by himself!

4.  The bean LOVES to walk everywhere holding onto even just one hand and he is NOT afraid of trying to let go and stand on his own or dive for something he wants....which is making his mama a bit afraid!  He's still quite wobbly, but he's getting better each day. I'm pretty sure with this new found love, he will never traditionally crawl, but we'll see.

5. During the teething troubles, we decided to give Thomas one of his Christmas gifts early--we needed something to new to distract us and keep this mama sane :)  So, he is loving playing with his new table thing and moving back and forth between it and the chair.  Being the only born grandchild right now {though not for long!!} on both sides, we figured he would get plenty of other fun things from us, the grandparents, and aunts/uncles, so he wouldn't even miss it.

thomas

Our little boy is 9 months old today.  I can't believe time's gone so quickly and he's changed so much.  He is becoming more and more like a little boy each day and sometimes I wish I could just put time on hold and enjoy this stage a little longer.  What a precious gift from the Lord he is to us!  I'll be back soon for a 9 month post and some pictures from today!  For now, here's a few we have taken recently of the bean :)

Sorry for the less than stellar quality of pictures-- they are mostly iphone pics and our child is CONSTANTLY moving :)  I did take some pictures on our nice camera the other day that I'll upload soon.

caught red-handed

So far, Thomas is not very interested in the Christmas tree, BUT the presents are another story.  He wants to touch all of them and he just loves the paper!  I guess he inherited it from me, although he can't read so he's not searching out and guessing his own presents, but stealing other peoples....we'll work on it! :)

Yes, those are Cheerios in my carpet. Don't judge.

finger foods

In the last few weeks, Thomas has really mastered picking up food with his fingers and getting it into his mouth!  While I am getting his meal ready, I often put a few Cheerios or pieces of cheese on his tray and he just goes to town.  I also try to be sneaky and put new food on his tray sometimes, but if he decides he doesn't like it, he then won't touch anything on the whole tray!  It's pretty funny.

I've found that it usually takes him some time to get used to a new food or texture.   For instance, I used to not be able to get him to eat peas or green beans-- he would take a bite or two and then refuse to open his mouth!  But after trying them several times, he loves them.  So, I'm just persistent and we're working on trying more bite-sized things.  Any suggestions of good finger foods he can gum?  So far we've tried avocado, green beans, strawberries, banana, oranges, cheese, Cheerios and puffs, wheat bread, and wheat pasta.  I've heard babies usually like black beans, so i'm going to try those--although that's what I heard about avocado and so far, he hates it!

Baby, it's cold outside...

I'm quite sure that one day Thomas will give me a hard time for putting this hat on him.  I know because I've done it to my own mom.  I'm definitely going to have to post a picture of my bangs when I was little.....ay!  And I'll probably tell Thomas the same thing my mom told me, "you BEGGED to have me cut them like that!"  So, maybe he's a little young to beg to wear this hat, but it's not like he's crying, right?  Seems perfectly happy and cute as can be to me!

oops. it's been two weeks {again}.

Life has recently gotten quite busy {thus the long break}.  Here's what's been going on in no particular order:

1. Thomas has a yucky cold again. Oh, and both bottom teeth have just popped through.   These two things combined are making my normally sweet, sweet baby a bit fussy and giving him sleep troubles. Poor thing!  He also keeps getting himself stuck in the corner of the crib, which isn't helping.

2. My mom came to visit :).  We had a fabulous time doing all kinds of fun things, were incredibly spoiled by her and can't wait to see her at Christmas!  Less than 2 weeks now!!!!

3. Have I mentioned that my parents are moving to Paris for 2 years?  Umm, yea. We are definitely going to miss them, but we are also so excited for them, plus we are going to visit in MAY!!  AHHHHH! It's ok to be jealous.

4. James is taking finals, which is not my favorite time of the semester.  But, he will be done Wednesday and we are planning to really enjoy this break {minus him getting his 3rd molars removed}.  We're having his family here to celebrate, my best friend from college {who is having a sweet baby is April} is coming for a quick visit on her way to see family AND we're heading to SC for Christmas and then to the beach with my family for a week!  I can already smell the ocean!  And we're excited to see what Thomas thinks of it :)

5. We're DONE Christmas shopping- COMPLETELY!  Online shopping is SO easy. Now we just get to sit back and enjoy the season and time together :)

6. I can't really think of what else has gone on.....so, I'll just end with a picture or two and I'll try to be here a bit more frequently!

Both pictures were taken before teeth eruption. I'll definitely take a picture of Thomas' new central incisors as soon as they are fully out! :)

Let the baby proofing begin...

Between rolling and his new funny scoot, Thomas is really moving these days :) It's definitely keeping me on my toes!

Sara and Matt visit!

We've been busy this week, but I wanted to share a quick picture from last weekend! James' sister, Sara, and her boyfriend, Matt, came from MSU to visit us for the day and we had a great time!  We ate Jimmy Johns, played with the bean, the boys played some video games while Sara and I ran to Target, had ice cream at the new Comfy Cow, walked around Frankfort Ave a bit, played the wii, had a home cooked dinner and fresh apple pie and played Bananagrams!  Thomas enjoyed all the attention and his new adorable hoodie that Aunt Sara brought him :)

not bad for an iphone picture :)

We can't wait until they come back again!

Halloween: our little {Clemson} tiger!

Thomas and I spent his first Halloween in SC with my family! Unfortunately, James had to head home early, but we made sure to take lots of pictures so he could see our cute little tiger.  Thomas had no say in his costume, but I am positive he would have chosen to be a Clemson tiger anyway--just to make his mama proud!    I actually bought this last year when I was pregnant on major clearance--worth all $3 if I do say so myself!  We didn't do any trick-or-treating since he can't eat the candy anyway, but we did go over to my brother's house where they set up an awesome tent and gave out hot apple cider, cookies, and candy to all their neighbors!  It was amazing and such a great way to serve their community!

Not really sure about all this....
 Modeling the side-profile
He had to get into character by trying to eat me.
 Love my brother!
 Oma and the tiger
Thomas was SO zonked by the time we left and fell asleep in the car before we even got out of the neighborhood.  I did get lots of snuggles as a result!
Jami and Lauren-- Thanks for having us over!
Daddy enjoying the hot apple cider.
  The set-up...such a great idea!

We had a really great Halloween and in my opinion, Thomas was sooooo, soooo cute!!! But I know, I'm a bit biased.

splish, splash I was taking a bath...

Thomas got his first bath in the sink while we were in SC.  James took the little ramp {he left early to get back to school} we use to bathe him in the big bathtub and my parents tub is too slippery to have him sit up in it--so I opted for the good old kitchen sink route.  It's generally tragic to his nighttime sleep if we skip the bath and since he was already having troubles, I needed all the help I could get :).  Not to mention, he was super cute and smiley as usual!

It's so funny to watch him try to catch the water.  He can't figure out why he can't grab it when he can see it!

Rebekah's kitchen: recent {mostly pumpkin} recipes

I've been in the fall mood and so has apparently everyone else in our city since canned pumpkin is often hard to find!  Here are just a few recipes that I've tried in the past few weeks....

Pumpkin cookies- These came out with more of the consistency of muffin tops than cookies, but tasted absolutely delightful. James scarfed the first batch down!  They had just a hint of sweetness which made them really great for breakfast.  I decided to skip the chocolate glaze since they were great on their own.  I also ended up baking half of them and freezing the other half in individual cookie pieces to bake later. They stuck together a little bit in the freezer, but tasted just as great as making them fresh!

Low-fat Pumpkin bread- Can I just say YUM?  It is delicious and easy to make--not to mention fairly low in calories. I would highly recommend it!!

Pumpkin butter- Are you noticing a trend yet?  This recipe seemed easier than it ended up.  For whatever reason I could NOT get mine to thicken on the stove and I even cooked it way longer than it called for.  I ended up throwing it in the crock pot on low for a few hours with the lid slightly off to let out the liquid and it turned out GREAT, not to mention so much easier. Don't forget to stir it occasionally if you try it. Perfect on toast and probably even better on some pumpkin pancakes! Oh, and my apt. smelled amazing

Taco chicken bowls-  We've had these a few times and really love them!  They are easy {most of the work is done by the crock pot and rice cooker!}, cheap and delicious. Plus they freeze really well, so you can easily make extra and have it again!

Roasted butternut squash-  This was absolutely delicious and we will be having it again this week with some grilled chicken and green beans!  James is not the biggest fan of squash, but LOVED it and so did I.  I skipped the olive oil and just sprayed a little pam on the squash to cut calories.  It turned out SO good.  The texture is more like a home-fry than a squishy squash which pleased my husband :). My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

I'm also trying this chicken pot pie soup this week and possibly this potato soup next week {my friend Beth says is great!}-- I'll let you know how it goes!

jen's baby shower: part two

Jen's shower had the perfect mix of friends and family and everyone was so generous!  Many friends sent presents even though they couldn't make it, leaving Jen with an awesome pile of gifts to get ready for her new daughter :).  Each time she opened a gift, she had to answer a common pediatrician question written by the guests.  Some of her friends {also being pediatricians!} tried their best to ask some off-the-wall questions!  It was fun to hear all the answers and crazy things people ask! :)

I'm so glad it went so well and most importantly, that Jen had a great time!  Love you, sister, and SOOOOO excited to meet my niece in just a few months.
