a thankful heart

i am so thankful that God decided to have the rain clear up this afternoon. what a blessing sunshine is! i really needed it and it was great to be able to bring the girls outside this afternoon. it's still cool out for late April (high of 61 today) but James and I were able to go on a nice walk through Cherokee Park tonight:) hopefully the walk will help him be more productive studying tonight. he is halfway through finals week and we are both excited for his freshmen year to be OVER on Thursday! wow! we can't believe how fast it went. here's to the next 3 years going JUST as fast! :)

i have had a very light work week and that has also been a blessing to us. thanks Lord! james and i have been able to spend little snippets of time together so that it doesn't seem like he's studying too much:) i like weeks like that. God has been so great to us!

DIY crazy!

Yesterday (on my day off) I went a little DIY crazy! We acquired this super cute table which was an old, children's school desk from James' mom. Thanks Mom! It was in rough shape. I started by cleaning the whole thing from head to toe and then sanding the drawer because it was not sliding (it now slides, but not super well). I also sanded some of the top so that the chipping paint wouldn't be able to be seen under my paint and used some goop (LOVE that stuff) on one of the legs that was loose. Then I got right down to painting....

Here's the BEFORE:

And AFTER (sorry photo is a little dark):

Cute, right? I like it!

Project #2 was a bit more complicated! I got my inspiration for the idea from a fellow blogger and friend, Beth. Check it out here....and she got the inspiration from this great blog. I can't imagine taking on a whole wall, but it looked awesome when she was done! Since I acquired this cute table from our neighbor who was getting rid of it, I decided to try the new stencil technique. I should have taken a before picture, but forgot so I will just describe the table before and you will have to imagine it. It was black with cute metal knobs that were twiney (a word?). Originally I was going to keep the knobs, but after the paint they did not look right anymore, so we went to Hobby Lobby and got glass knobs (so cute and 50% off!). Ok enough words, here is the finished product. Don't you just love it?

I have to admit that though it was annoying to create and cut out the whole stencil and then stand with my back bent over the table stenciling- it was worth it! I LOVE it! I don't even want to put anything on it that would cover up the top! Haha, what do you think?

Groceries for 82% off!

Well, James and I had another successful grocery run last night. He was so sweet to go with me to get all the deals! I actually did the best that I have done so far and saved 82%! We were only going to run into Target for a few things and then to Kroger, but ended up stopping by Walmart for 2 things on the way home that we couldn't find at Kroger and Target. Here's what I got:

  • 4 pillsbury cinnamon rolls ($.40 each)
  • 2 yoplait greek yogurts (free)
  • 4 Benedryl itch sticks (we won't be scratching this summer! Free + overage!)
  • 1 Mentos gum ($.45)
  • 2 Green Giant frozen veggies (free +overage)
  • 2 Smart Taste Spaghettis ($.25 each)
  • 4 pears (didn't need to much fruit because we had a few apples and pears left from last week)
  • 4 pack of Angel Soft tp
  • 3 small coffee mate creamers (2 of these were free!)
  • 12 pack of turkey burgers
  • 2 country crock butter tubs ($.10 each)
  • 1 bottle of Motrin PM
**note: McDs bag in background= James' late night snack :)

Do you want to know how much we spent?

The total BEFORE sales and coupons was $51.16 and AFTER $9.63!!!!!! AMAZING!! I have to admit we were pretty excited so I just had to share!

Anyway, today I think I may do some painting- we have acquired some used furniture pieces lately and they need to be sanded and painted, so I think I may work on that today. I am also planning on making soup for dinner and then going to community group. Other than that and some housework, I plan on relaxing! Happy Thursday!

Don't you just love polka dots?

This weekend Jen and Joey came to visit us and as always- we had a BLAST with them! We were able to spend lots of fun time outdoors, eating great food, laughing and even snatching some awesome consignment shop deals! They brought us these cute polka dot plates that were the perfect size for our muffins tonight and go seamlessly with our green bowls! Don't you just love polka dots? Thanks guys for being such awesome guests! You are welcome ANYTIME!!!

In other news, tonight while James is was studying (he has a big final tomorrow- so prayers would be much appreciated!), I went grocery shopping. This week we did not need chicken or meat and have a stockpile in our pantry/freezer of other things. We also have a TON of frozen and canned veggies but I ended up buying a few more since they were stinkin' cheap! I love pairing sales and coupons. Here's what I got:

If you can't see everything, here's the list:
  • a dozen eggs
  • Breyers Health Bar ice cream (unhealthy but OH so good!)
  • canister of Folgers coffee
  • head of lettuce
  • Deli meat
  • 2 rolls of paper towels
  • 3 bagged potatoes-FREE (good for recipes)
  • Sun chips (garden salsa flavor- excited to try these!)- FREE
  • Lenders bagels
  • 2 steamfresh veggies- practically FREE
  • 2 6-packs of Reese Eggs (brain food for the hubby:)- 75% off
  • a gallon of milk
  • 2 things of Snuggle dryer sheets-FREE
  • Glade room spray-FREE

Would you like to guess what I spent?

If you did the math, you would find that the total BEFORE sales and coupons was $45.96 (tax not included) and AFTER $19.96!! Thus successfully staying in our $20/week budget. I am pretty proud since our Kroger does not do B1G1 and we are not privileged enough to have a Publix (guess we will have to move back south one day:)! I have not done CVS this week yet, but am planning to get some more free things tomorrow:)

I have some more fun pics to post of other things we have done recently, but will save them for another time! Guess you will have to come back:)

you can't beat free!

Yesterday I did a whole bunch of couponing and got a slew of great things. Since this airwick ultra imotion was FREE @ Target with the sale and 2 coupons I had, I decided to try it! After all, you can't beat free! I have to admit that it's pretty awesome- it smells great and is making our apt. (which sometimes just smells old) smell great. Actually I like almost everything about it, but there is one drawback....when it sprays out the airfreshener as you walk by, it makes a small noise and it keeps making me jump! I cannot seem to remember that it's there and that it's just an air freshener! Hopefully sometime in the next few days it will stop freaking me out so that I can fully appreciate it:)

Spring cleaning day!

Some people hate spring cleaning.

Not me.

Is it weird that I enjoy it? It's not that I have that much fun doing it, it's just that the final result feels so good- like I accomplished something tangible and made our little home even better for my hubby and I. Today I conquered the guest room closet. Although it didn't seem very messy, it had become the catch-all for everything in our apt. that didn't have a home. And so this morning (after coffee and time in the Word), I spent a few hours cleaning out the closet, putting away heavy sweaters (hopefully I won't need them anymore), and getting out some summer clothes/shoes. I also worked on moving coats that we won't be using for awhile and some other odds and ends.

In other news, Jen and Joey arrive tomorrow afternoon! YAY! We can't wait to enjoy spending time with them! We have a lovely weekend ahead of us- OH and I don't have to work tomorrow! amazing.

ps- James has a stressful April ahead, so pray for him! Luckily, when he does finish, he gets a nice week off! YAY!
